Anagrams
Inspired by watching "Word Wars" this weekend (a documentary on Scrabble tournaments), and by the fact that sitting in linguistics lecture is the most pointless experience of my life, I attempted to discover a clever anagram of my name. I was delighted to discover that
EMILY ANN SOMERS
rearranges quite nicely into
ROSES IN MY NAME
That is, until I realized I had forgotten the letter L. Then all that was left was the dismal
LOSERS IN MY NAME
And oh, I was sad.
But anyway, this weekend was nice. Went home. Got nothing done, as usual, because I can't study in my house. But I did watch a lot of movies. "Word Wars" which was fantastic ("No fucking way 'bemeant' is a word!") and "The Motorcycle Diaries" which has given my dad worse roadtrip fever than usual.
I threw together a rewrite of my Keats paper for textual analysis yesterday afternoon. It was simply awful, but at least it's done. My grade in that class will be a complete surprise to me.
Went to my first physical therapy session yesterday afternoon. My therapist was very nice, with a familiar jaw and a voice I'm sure I've heard before somewhere. The best part was none of it was nearly as painful as I imagined it to be. Just lots of stretching and ice. Of course, I had to go back to the doctor this morning to get my finger pricked and hemoglobin checked. A Snoopy bandaid evened it out, however.
I'm off to class in the rain, but:
1. New Gilmore Girls tonight!
2. 87 days

Don't you think it's getting pretty close to the time to get over this linguistics thing? It sounds like the same old story - an uninspired teacher making you read crap. Buy a fresh roll of Charmin, wipe your brain thoroughly, and read anything by Noam Chomsky. Then look for "Moral Politics" by George Lakoff - a linguist and a cognitive scientist. It's all about applied linguistics - you know, the answer to that troublesome question, "Yeah, but how am I ever going to actually use this stuff in real life!?"
I really don't mean to sounds so whiny about my linguistics class. I just get disappointed with classes with so much potential but where I learn nothing. It's not that I dislike linguistics itself--I really liked "The Language Instinct" by Steven Pinker. But clearly sociolinguistics was the wrong path to take.
