Study Abroad
Day 7
January 24th, 2006
7:51 PM
Today I had the rest of my classes. My first class, at 9, is “The Art of Reading Literary Texts” or something lame like that. I still think I should’ve gotten exempted from it for taking two years of Spanish literature in high school, but I got an e-mail the other day saying I wasn’t granted credit. Joder. It’s basically an introductory literature class and it’s required for a Spanish major. My professor seems fine; she’s articulate and everything. I have the class with Amy. We’re reading some new stuff, but many things I already read in high school. Luckily they’re stories I liked.
I have that same teacher later in the day for a women’s literature class, but I used my break to finally get my computer configured (it now officially works in the hallway outside of the computer lab, not in my room) and to get my ass to the grocery store while it’s open. I bought some magdalenas for breakfast. I also went back to the library to buy most of my books (you’ve got to love how cheap they are here).
Women’s lit looks fine also; I can’t say I’ve read a lot of it before. Being fresh from taking my independent study women’s lit course for English credit should make it more interesting. Plus I have the class with Robin.
“Spanish Master Painters” was next, which I also have with Robin, and yes, it’s another art history class. Too bad it takes 18 credits to get a minor; I’m not sure I have the energy to do 9 more. The class looks good, too. We’re going to study El Greco, Velazquez, Picasso, Dali, Goya and Miro. We’re doing museum visits to the Prado and Reina Sofia, which should be fun, but they’re on Fridays, so that severely limits my options for weekend trips, which sucks.
I have that class before and after lunch. There was flan at lunch, which made me happy, plus leftovers of the good pasta dish we had last night, so I didn’t even have to resort to all kinds of bread. After lunch we had a meeting where they lectured us for a half an hour about remembering to speak Spanish around the residencia. Danielle and I played hangman.
To recap, I am taking 6 classes (18 credits), all in Spanish, obviously:
-Theology of Spanish Mysticism
-Spanish Linguistics
-The Cultural Heritage of Spain
-Spanish Master Painters
-The Art of Reading Literary Texts
-Women’s literature
For now I’m just chilling around my room. At 10 tonight they’re giving a Flamenco class, which I’m very excited about. I will surely suck, but it will be sweet.
