My classes, part 2

I've now officially been to all of my classes. Here we go.

Intro to Social Justice looks good. A lot of work, probably, but I'll learn a lot that I haven't really studied before. Part of the class is reading and discussion about social justice issues (prison system, immigration, etc.) and part is volunteering outside of class with an organization. The professor seems really cool (I'll elaborate as I get to know her) and I'm sure everyone in the classroom is pretty brilliant.

I'm also taking my first education class. It's small--just the students that are early admitted to the M.Ed. program, which is about 8 people. But we have 2 teachers, so we get extra-special attention. It's a one-credit class, so it meets 5 times. We will talk about education type issues, but there's a volunteering component to this class as well. Lucky for me, my teachers for both classes seem to be very accomodating and are willing to try to find me a volunteer opportunity which will fulfill both a classroom experience and a social justice experience. Hopefully it will be something interesting.

Some might say that "Social Justice" is a contradiction of terms, like "Military Intelligence". I'm going to start up my blogging again soon, and this sounds like a great course. Please let me know if you encounter any good books. It seems like the concept of deterrence is pretty critical, especially when you think of things like the death penalty. Does a perpetrator really think that far out in the heat of passion? Then there's the moral perspective. What's just for me and you is not the same as it is for a band of terrorists.

There is no question that the death penalty is NOT a deterrent to violent crime. Anyone who thinks otherwise has not taken the time to evaluate the data.
